As much as Sand Island Beach has been a home to a family for generations, so a number of our staff have been with us for generations - many have worked with us for more than twenty years. We pride ourselves on a tight, loyal, friendly team; large enough to get the job done but small enough that our guests can know them a little.
Arty and Cheryl are your hosts at Sand Island. Arty was born and raised in Kenya, he has been a hotelier and a cook since forever. He's cooked on film sets, including Kenya's iconic Out of Africa, and most recently, before Sand Island, he helped put Kilimanjaro Golf and Wildlife Estate in Northern Tanzania on the map. He's a superb and inventive chef and is happy to prepare dinners to order. Cheryl was born in Harare and grew up in Zambia. She has a comprehensive knowledge of the travel business, having worked on myriad travel publications in Kenya and Zambia including Travel News, Destination Kenya and the Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide. Both are keen golfers, love people and are completely au fait with where to go, what to see and do. They are kept company by their three super-friendly dogs: Bella, Blixem and Kimmel.
And don't be intimidated by the self-catering bit: self catering doesn't mean you have to cook yourself! Good gracious, no. Not on holiday. Not unless you really want to. We are fortunate to have on hand a team of freelance cooks, some of whom we have worked with for years. Arty's culinary know-how means he is able to support our resident chefs who are all confident in the preparation of seafood and lots of delicious traditional Swahili dishes. Don't be fazed by octopus and calamari if you've never prepared them before - the cooks will either do it for you or show you how.
